안녕하세요 여러분! KoreanStudyJunkie입니다~ In this lesson, you'll learn how to say "I didn't know that.." and "I thought that.." in Korean. While this grammar is relatively simple to use, the most "complicated" part is the seemingly many different conjugation forms.
The ending - 알았다 / 몰랐다 is always in the past tense form -았, SO that will never change. But the TENSE is changed by the letters in front of it. By paying attention to these 는, 은, 을, ㄹ changes, you'll know how the sentence should be read or said.
VERBS
Present Tense (현재): -는 (줄 알았다/몰랐다)
Past Tense (과거):
Consonant-ending -은 (줄 알았다/몰랐다)
Vowel-ending -ㄴ (줄 알았다/몰랐다)
Future Tense (미래):
Consonant-ending -을 (줄 알았다/몰랐다)
Vowel-ending -ㄹ (줄 알았다/몰랐다)
This same form can also be used for guesses and supposition (추측)
ADJECTIVES
*when it comes to Adjectives usually it's only used with past tense
Past Tense (과거):
Consonant-ending -은 (줄 알았다/몰랐다)
Vowel-ending -ㄴ (줄 알았다/몰랐다)
NOUNS
Present Tense (현재): 인 (줄 알았다/몰랐다)
Past Tense (과거): -이었는/였는 (줄 알았다/몰랐다)
EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT TENSES (VERBS) :
First, I'll show you the "same" or similar sentences to show how each tense works and changes the translation and meaning.
아침에 날씨가 흐려서 비가 올 줄 알았어요.
It was cloudy in the morning, so I thought that it will rain. / I thought it would rain. [future]
*I thought it would rain, but it will not rain
날씨가 맑아서 비가 올 줄 몰랐어요.
It's sunny, so I didn't know that it will rain. / I didn't know that it would rain [future]
*I didn't know it would rain, but it will
비가 오는 줄 알았어요. = I thought it's raining. / I thought it was raining. [present]
*I thought it was raining, but It is not raining
비가 오는 줄 몰랐어요. = I didn't know it's raining. / I didn't know it was raining [present]
*I didn't know it was raining, but It is
비가 온 줄 알았어요. = I thought it rained. [past]
*I thought It rained, but It did not rain
비가 온 줄 몰랐어요. = I didn't know that it rained. [past]
*I didn't know that it rained, but It did rain
나도 사과를 다 먹은 줄 몰랐는데, 영수가낮에 다 먹었다더라고.
I didn't know I ate all the apples, but Youngsoo said he ate them all during the day.
이 시간에 일을 하고 있을 줄 몰랐어요.
I didn't know you were working at this time.
작년에 캘리포니아로 이사간 줄 알았는데요.
I thought she moved to California last year.
EXAMPLES WITH ADJECTIVES:
날씨가 추운 줄 알았어요.
I thought it was cold. (But it is not cold)
날씨가 추운 줄 몰랐어요.
I didn't know that it was cold. (But it is cold)
나는 승규가 그렇게 똑똑한 줄 몰랐는데 오늘 발표를 보고 알았어.
I didn't know Seungyu was that smart, but after watching the presentation, I realized.
아침마다 운동하는 게 이렇게 힘든 줄 몰랐어.
I didn't know exercising every morning was this hard.
지갑을 잃어버린 줄 알았는데 서랍 속에 있었습니다.
I thought I lost my wallet, but it was inside the drawer.
시장에 사람이 이렇게 많을 줄 몰랐어요.
I didn't know there would be this many people in the market.
저는 민준이가 늦을 줄 알았어요.
I thought Minjun would be late.
EXAMPLES WITH NOUNS:
나미 씨가 일본 사람인 줄 몰랐어요. 한국 사람인 줄 알았어요.
I didn't know that Nami was a Japanese. I thought that she was a Korean.
저 사람이 니 남자친구인지 몰랐어.
I didn't know that person is your boyfriend.
저 사람이 여자일 줄 몰랐어요.
I didn't know that person was a woman.
여기에서 선생님을 만날 줄 몰랐어요.
I didn't expect to see a teacher here.
