(으)면서 vs 는 동안에 | A Very Short Review

안녕하세요? Precious 입니다, today we shall learn the differences between (으)면서 and 는 동안에.

(으)면서 is used to indicate that two or more actions are happening at the same time. The two actions must be by the same person.

받침 있으면 (If final consonant present) - 먹다 / 읽다 > 먹으면서 / 읽으면서

받침 없으면 (If final consonant absent) - 가다 / 요리 하다 > 가면서 / 요리를 하면서

받침 'ㄹ' 있으면 (If final consonant 'ㄹ' present) - 살다 / 불다 > 살면서 / 불면서

Examples:

저녁밥을 먹으면서 텔레비전을 볼 거예요.

[Eating dinner and watching television at the same time - same person doing both actions]

한국에 살면서 여행을 해요.

[Travelling while living in Korea - same person living in Korea and travelling]

요리를 하면서 음악을 들어요.

[Cooking and listening to music at the same time by the same person]

In short, if final consonant is present, except for those ending in ㄹ, you attach 으면서. For verbs with no final consonant or ends in ㄹ 받침, you attach 면서.

Take note that the verbs directly in front of (으)면서 has to be in it's base form, so no 았/었 etc.

는 동안에 is used to indicate the duration for which an action continues. May involve more than one person, unlike in (으)면서, where the actions must be done by the same subject.

받침 있으면 (If final consonant present) - 먹다 / 읽다 > 먹는 동안에 / 읽는 동안에

받침 없으면 (If final consonant absent) - 가다 / 요리 하다 > 가는 동안에 / 요리하는 동안에

받침 'ㄹ' 있으면 (If final consonant 'ㄹ' present) - 살다 / 불다 > drop the 'ㄹ' and attach 는 동안에 directly > 사는 동안에 / 부는 동안에

Examples:

저는 먹는 동안에 엄머니가 청소를 해요.

[My mother clean while I eat]

가는 동안에 뉴스를 들어요.

[I listen to the news while I was walking]

한국에서 사는 동안에 한국 친구를 많이 사귀었습니다.

[During my stay in Korea, I made many Korean friends]
