에게 vs 한테 | The difference between 에게 and 한테

안녕 여러분~ It's Koreanstudyjunkie here! This is gonna be quick Q&A type of lesson. I won't be teaching you how to use these particles, just answering frequently asked questions.

What's The Difference Between 에게 & 한테?

They can be used Interchangeably, but 한테 is used more commonly in spoken Korean - for that reason some refer to it as informal or casual language. 에게 is often seen and used in written Korean which is associated with formal language most often. That being said, they have the exact same meaning and usage and can be used anywhere, anytime to convey your desired meaning.

What is 께?

There is another form of this: 께. While it also has the same meaning as the other two It is honorifc, meaning you must use slightly more formal/honorifc language with it when speaking about someone higher than you in status or much older than you. There are honorifc words that you must use as well - here's another lesson with a list of honorifc words.

한테 vs 한테서 | 에게 vs 에게서

에게 and 한테 can mean "to" a living thing. But 에게서 and 한테서 mean "from" a living thing. It's the opposite meaning in other words.

EX:

친구한테서 들었어요. I heard it from a friend.

선생님에게서 한국어를 배워요. I'm learning Korean from a teacher.

께 does not change in form. It stays the same.

EX:

선생님께 한국어를 배웁니다. I'm learning Korean from a teacher.
