에 대해(서), 에 대한, 에 관해 Lesson

안녕! It's Koreanstudyjunkie. Let's learn how to talk "about" things in Korean. This grammar is very easy to use and doesn't have a ton of rules behind it. There's a short dialogue + practice at the end, so stick around.

N + 에 대해(서) + V = about

Usage: used when the speaker wants to express concern or responsibility for something. The equivalent English words could be " about " for easier understanding.

It is always followed by a verb. -에 대해 is the shortened form of 에 대해서, so there’s no difference.

Examples:

저는 한국 문화에 대해서 많이 알아요.

I know a lot about korean culture

요즘에는 너무 더워서 매일 날씨에 대해 이야기해요.

It's very hot recently so we talk about the weather every day.

저는 한국 음식에 대해 잘 몰라요.

I don't know much about korean food.

우리 오빠는 자동차에 대해서 많이 알고 있어요.

My(our) dad knows a lot about cars.

N + 에 대한 + N

Usage: ~에 대한 holds the same meaning as the standard form, but instead it's followed by nouns and not verbs.

Examples:

한국어에 대한 책

A book about the Korean language

민혁에 대한 소문을 들었어요?

Did you hear the rumors about Minhyuk?

한국으로 이사하는 것에 질문을 자주 받아요.

I often get questions about moving to Korea.

그건 제 질문에 대한 대답이 아니에요.

That is not the answer to my question.

에 관해(서) & 에 관한 can also be used interchangeably in place of 에 대해(서) & 에 대한, however It has a slightly different feel to it than 에 대해.

The big difference is that 에 관해 forms sound more formal/official, sounds stronger too, and It’s less common. Usually used In documents and official writing, but not as often in conversations.

CONVERSATION:

가: 엄마! 왜 갑자기 나와셨어요? 깜짝 놀랐는데요.

나: 앉아. 할 얘기가 있어.

가: 무슨 일이세요?

나: 너 성적에 대해 얘기하고 싶어.

PRACTICE:

translate these sentences Into Korean

1.) I bought a book about Korean grammar.

2.) My mom talked about my dad.
