쉬어요 vs 쉬워요

Writer: KSJ 쌤KSJ 쌤

안녕하세요, I'm koreanstudyjunkie!

These 2 words have a pronounciation that is confusingly similar to a lot of learners, but actually they are very different words.

One is a verb and one is an adjective / descriptive verb.

One is a regular verb and one is irregular verb. Therefore, the conjugation is very different.

쉬다 = to rest (Verb)

쉬다 > 쉬 + 어요 = 쉬어요 (shwi-oyo)

Informal: 쉬어

Formal: 쉬 + ㅂ니다 = 쉽니다

Ex).

주말에 쉬어요.

= I rest on the weekends.

침대에서 쉴 거예요.

= I'll rest in bed.

쉬지 않았어요.

= I didn't rest

쉽다 = to be easy (Adjective)

쉽다 > 쉬 + 우 + 어요 = 쉬워요 (shwi-woyo)

Irregular conjugation rules:

1). Remove ㅂ and 다

2). Add an extra 우

3). Conjugate as normal - add 어요
