또 vs 다시 | How to say "again" in Korean

I'm going to be discussing the difference between 또 and 다시.

다시 and 또 Definition:

다시 means "again" and can have a negative feeling behind it.

또 means "once more". It doesn't have any negative connotations associated with it.

다시 vs 또

I used this reddit post for a lot of this explanation.

또 and 다시 are both routinely translated as “again” in English, but their usages do not always coincide

다시 can mean:

1). to start anew something you have already done either in the same way or in a different way, because you found that something is wrong.

2). It also means 'redesign, remodel, innovate, recreate' on certain occasions.

3). If one used to do something regularly or often, and stopped for few days or for a long time, and recently starts it again.

또 can mean:

1). to do something regularly and repeatedly, or that something happens regularly and repeatedly.

2). more beyond what has already been specified.

3). in spite of

Let's look at some examples.

Ex)

= It seems like I need to make this food again.

Someone doesn't like the food that they already made or there was a problem with the food, so the person needs to make the food either in the same way or in a different way.

= It seems like I need to make this food again.

The foods that the person prepared were all out, so the person needs to make more food, in the same way. (Once more they need to make food)

= I should study English again.

3 Different Feelings This Sentence Gives:

I had the incorrect knowledge about English . I need to check it again.

I have studied English with the wrong methods. I need to start again, but with new methods.

- I haven't studied English for a long time / for few days. I need to start studying English again.

= I should study English once more.

2 Different Feelings This Sentence Gives:

I failed the test, so I need to study English again. (Unable to figure out whether or not new learning methods are applied)

I used to study English and stopped learning English. However, I need to begin studying English once more to prepare for the promotion exam.

= I have to start again.

2 Different Feelings This Sentence Gives:

We have used wrong methods. We need to start from the beginning with new methods.

- We haven't tried to do it for a long time / for few days. Now, it is time to start it again.

= Here we go again!

Sidenote:

There is an interesting expression:

또다시 = Again and again.

You can use "또다시" in any situations where 또 or 다시 can be used.

If you are confused with the use of 또 and 다시, you can use '또다시'. Simple and efficient.

= I have to study English again (and again).

IN CONCLUSION:

Both are similar. But, 다시 means "again (to fix a mistake)", or to "resume" something you did in the past. 또 means "once more" simply.

ex) Sit back down.

또 앉아(X)

ex) Try again

(Fix your mistake)

또 해봐(=do it again, even mistake)

ex) I made the same mistake again.

ex) Good bye, See you later

  • both okay, but second is stronger.

ex) It's raining. Let's meet again another time.

다음에 다시 만나자 (Let's delay our plan.)또 만나자 (X)
