How To Use ~다가? (1) | A Very Short Review

안녕하세요? Precious 입니다. Today I learnt a new grammar, -다가, shall we review it together?

다가 is used as a conjunction to indicate an interruption in an action or state which then changes into a different action or state. It is attached to either an adjective or a verb.

Examples:

잠을 자다가 너무 더워서 못 잤어요

When I was sleeping, it became too hot, so I couldn't sleep.

(I was sleeping. It became hot, so now I'm awake.)

공부를 하다가 잠을 잤어요

When I was studying, I fell asleep.

(I was studying, but I fell asleep instead. My studying was put to a halt.)

밥을 먹다가 화장실에 갔어요

While I was eating, I went to the washroom.

(I was eating, but I stopped eating and then went to the washroom.)

아이가 놀다가 넘어져서 울어요

The child was playing, then he fell, thus he is crying.

(He was playing, but he fell. He is no longer playing, he is now crying.)

Did you notice that whether or not the 형용사 or 동사 ends with 받침, there is no change to how 다가 is attached?

먹다 > 먹다가

놀다 > 놀다가

공부 하다 > 공부를 하다가

One important thing to take note is that the person who is involved in the action attached to -다가, must also be involved in the action after the change. (same person throughout)

This short post was for me to recap on what I've just learnt in my Korean class. I will be back with more of -다가 soon!

Thanks for reading today's post, 또 봐요!
