How to say ‘I want to’ in Korean | -고 싶다 Lesson

Updated: Nov 14, 2023

Hello guys and welcome back to another post. Let's talk about how to say 'I want to eat chicken' or 'I want to go to the park' in Korean.

To say 'you want'. You need to add 고 싶다 to the verb stem. By doing that you can express your wish/desire.

먹다 - (to eat) - 먹고 싶어요. (Want to eat)

가다 - (to go) - 가고 싶어요. (Want to go)

하다 -(to do) - 하고 싶어요. (Want to do)

Remove the 다 and add 고 싶다 to the verb stem.

For example:

저는 치킨 먹고 싶어요.

I want to eat chicken.

(jeoneun chikin meoggo ship-eoyo)

(먹다 changes to 먹고)

저는 공원에 가고 싶습니다.

I want to go to the park.

(jeoneun gong-won-e gago shipseubnida)

(가다 changes to 가고)

저는 쇼핑하러 가고 싶어요.

I want to go shopping.

(jeoneun syopinghareo gago ship-eoyo)

(가다 changes to 가고)

친구와 같이 영화를 보고 싶어요.

I want to watch a movie with my friend.

(chinguwa gat-i yeonghwaleul bogo ship-eoyo)

(보다 changes to 보고)

나는 그것을 하고 싶어.

I want to do it.

(naneun geugeos-eul hago ship-eo)

(하다 changes to 하고)

(Informal sentence)

나는 물을 마시고 싶어.

I want to drink water.

(naneun mul-eul mashigo ship-eo)

(마시다 changes to 마시고)

(Informal sentence)

You can even ask a question like:

Y : 뭐 하고 싶어요?

What do you want to do?

(mwo hago ship-eoyo?)

Z : 김치 먹고 싶어요.

I want to eat Kimchi.

(gimchi meoggo ship-eoyo)

I hope this post helped you in expressing your wish in Korean.
