How to say I intend to.... | ~(으)려면 and 그러려면 Lesson

Updated: Jul 5, 2022

여러분, 안녕하세요! I am Vaibhavi. In this lesson you will learn how to connect two clauses using ~(으)려면 to create the meaning "if one wants to" or more accurately "if one intends to". Let's start!

~(으)려면= If one wants to/If one intends to

Conjugation Rule is as follows:

When a verb stem has a consonant ~(으)려면 is used, whereas when a verb stem has a vowel ~려면 is used.

The sentence structure is generally as follows:

The plan or the intention to do something makes up the 1st clause of the sentence and the condition/ the required action to fulfill the intention makes up the 2nd clause.

Example:

이 작업을 완료하려면 많은 인내가 필요합니다.

If you intend to complete this task, you need a lot of patience.

Sentences that use ~(으)려면 as a conjunction are most likely to end with ~아/어야 하다 (which is used to mean 'to have to') or ~이/가 필요하다 (which is used to mean 'need to', 'must') or imperative ending like ~세요. The most common endings that you will come across would be ~이/가 필요하다 and 돼요.

Examples sentences:

1) 그렇게 비싼 것을 사려면 돈이 많이 필요해요. : If you intend to buy something that expensive, you need a lot of money

2) 서울에 가려면 지하철을 타세요! : If you intend to go to Seoul, then take the subway!

3) 한국 회사에서 일하려면 한국말을 잘 해야 돼요. :If you plan on working for a Korean company, you should speak Korean well.

4)이 식당에서 식사하시려면 예약을 하셔야 합니다. : If you intend to have a meal in this restaurant, you have to book in advance.

그러려면 = In order to do that:

그러려면 has the same meaning as ~(으)려면; the only difference is that 그러려면 is used more like a sentence connector that is, to connect two independent sentences and ~(으)려면 is used like a conjunction that is, to connect two clauses that cannot make sense when used independently.

Example Sentence:

I want to meet BTS. To do that, where should I go? : BTS를 만나고 싶어요. 그러려면 어디에 가야 돼요?

I want to see the beautiful scenery. To do that I need to wake up early in the morning. : 아름다운 풍경을 보고 싶습니다. 그러려면 아침에 일찍 일어나야 해요.
